Tennis - May 2006

Rafael Nadal has become the player with the highest clay court streak ever, beating Guillermo Vilas' record of 53 consecutive wins on clay after he defeated Robin Soderling of Sweden in the first round of the French Open.

Nadal had a easy straight sets victory, beating Soderling 6-2 7-5 6-1. The Spanish teenager looks to defend his Grand Slam title here, with the main competitor for the title being World Number 1 Roger Federer, who looks to complete his Grand Slam resume by adding the only one that is missing to his collection.

Rafa was presented with a trophy presented to him by Guillermo Vilas himself, who was present to watch Rafael's match. The trophy is made of glass, the design depicting the many layers which compose the clay court surface.

Andy Roddick is out of the French Open after injuring his foot and having to retire after trailing 4-6 5-7 0-1. He originally injured his ankle at the World Team Cup in Germany last week, which Croatia won. Andy has only advanced to the 3rd round once, on his 2001 debut.

It must have been a bad day for the Andys because Scottish teenager Andy Murray also suffered back problems through his five-set match against frenchman Gael Monfils. Gael beat Andy M 6-4 6-7 1-6 6-2 6-1.

Murray was 5-1 up in the third when the problems with his back started becoming more obvious and he asked for the trainer several times. As well, it was noticable that Murray started running around less in the later matches, preferring to keep to baseline rallying.

The match was spectacular, with drop shots, volleying, baseline rallying, a lot of different elements combined. (One of the reasons I like watching clay play.)

Gael Monfils made the umpire get down off his chair to check ball marks for several calls, to the booing of the French crowd.

Marat Safin is also out of the French Open, losing to Fernando Gonzales. In a two and a half hour match, the Chilean, seeded ninth, beat the unseeded Russian 6-3 1-6 6-3 6-1.

It's FRENCH OPEN TIME!

Roger Federer, who looks to be the first person since Rod Laver to win a Grand Slam, had a tough start to his campaign yesterday when he was faced with a "lucky loser" in Diego Hartfield of Argentina. The 156th ranked opponent managed to gain the upper hand early in the first round and Roger lost the first two of his service games, Diego leading at one time 3-0. Hartfield looked to make it 4-0 but Roger broke his serve back. From there Roger managed to break him again and take the set 7-5.

In the second set there were various exchanges of serve, with Diego giving everything into the game. He survived 3 set points and managed to take the 2nd set into a tiebreak. Unfortunately for the Argentine, Federer's greater experience in tiebreakers meant Roger won the 2nd set 7-6 (7-2).

Diego started cramping in the 3rd set, and Roger steamrolled to a 6-2 victory.

Verdict: Whilst it may suffice for a 1st round win, one hopes Roger is meerly saving up his energy for the tougher later round opponents and possibly a final with Nadal. However, I believe there is little chance of Roger winning the title if he continues at this standard of play.

David Nalbandian and Tommy Robredo also advanced into the second round in straight sets. Tim Henman needed 4 sets but he is also into the 2nd round.

Rafael is blogging his time at Roland Garros. I am about as excited about it as everyone else.

David Nalbandian d Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-4
Tommy Robredo d Tomas Zib 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Tim Henman d Kenneth Carlsen 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4
Carlos Moya d Juan Antonio Marin 7-5, 6-3, 6-3
Roger Federer d Diego Hartfield 7-5, 7-6(2), 6-2

Karlovic Hands Croatia Lead Over Germany

Ivo Karlovic gave Croatia a 1-0 lead over defending champions Germany in the final of the 29th ARAG ATP World Team Championships at the Rochusclub on Saturday.

The late replacement for Mario Ancic, who continues to suffer with a stiff back, came back from a 3-0 second set deficit to beat Alexander Waske of Germany 7-6(5), 6-4.

Germany captain Patrick Kuehnen was also forced into a late change, with original selection Philipp Kohlschreiber suffering a muscle injury before the championship decider commenced.

Karlovic and Waske had previously met twice at Challenger circuit level (2001-Puebla; 2003-Lubeck), with Waske winning both meetings.

While the first set went with serve to a tiebreak, Karlovic fell 3-0 behind in the second set before regaining his composure to win in 89 minutes.

Croatia reached the 1985 final losing to Germany, while Germany is vying to win a fifth title in Duesseldorf following wins in 1989, 1994, 1998, 2005.

Both countries emerged from their round robin groups undefeated 3-0, this week.

Reuters mentions that Arrnaud Clement, who was due to play Roger Federer in the 1st round of the French Open, has pulled out due to a groin injury attained whilst playing soccer (he was probably too excited what with the Champions League finals the World Cup coming. <-- I'm joking.)

Anyway, that article is here.

Sorely missed at the french open would be Gustavo Kuerton. Kuerton misses the FO after being a three-time champion there because of a hip injury. He has had hip surgery in 2004 and has not played much since, playing only 1 singles game this year.

Many probably already know that Andre Agassi has decided to skip the entire clay court season this year. Igor Andreev also misses out on FO because of a knee injury.

The players are falling like flies!

The debate again is with the tennis season being too hectic too long. For example, Monte Carlo, Rome Hamburg are played positively within weeks of each other. By the end of the season many are skipping tournaments to recover from injury or just to take a longer break. The season usually starts in Dubai or in Australia as a lead up to the Australian Open in early January, the Masters Cup in Shanghai (in which Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, Agassi, and Nadal all pulled out last year) is in late November, and if a country makes the Davis Cup final then they play beyond that.

2004 French Open Finalist Guillermo Coria has pulled out of the French Open due to an elbow injury. The clay court specialist was favourite to win in 2004 but was beaten by fellow Argentinian countryman Gaston Gaudio in five sets.

Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt are set to play at Roland Garros despite attaining injuries

French Open Draw!

May 26th 2006 11:44
I think the French Open draw is horrid. But then that's because I have a lot of players that I would like to see go far in this tournament BUT they're all playing each other in the first round.

I've yet to check the Women's Draw but it can be seen here (click on the thumbnail for a bigger view

So okay, Australian Tennis..

May 16th 2006 21:09
Lleyton Hewitt has cracked the top ten again for the first time since...well, the first tiime in a while.

Lleyton has not won any tournaments since the Sydney International last year and was unable to beat James Blake or Andy Murray in the finals of Las Vegas and San Jose respectively. Because of this Lleyton's ranking had slipped to 14 early on in the year

Gustavo is in our genes

May 12th 2006 12:15
Okay so I was in my biology lecture and we were learning about the structure of DNA.

Without boring anyone out there and making this quite short, DNA is composed of a sugar-phosphate backbone and 4 nitrogen base "rungs" which join two strands of sugar-phosphate backbone into a double helix. These are known as Adenine(A), Thymine (T), Guanine (G) and Cytosine (C). A-T stick together, G-C stick together, i.e. base pairs

Surprises abound - Rome Day 3

May 11th 2006 10:08
There was a mistake on the Rome Masters Website! Yesterday night the Order of Play stated that second seed Rafael Nadal would be playing Scottish teenager Andy Murray. I found this strange because Andy Murray had lost in the first round, and was very confused because I do not currently have tennis coverage! But today they changed it to say that Rafael was playing Andy's victor Filippo Volandri (ITA). Nonetheless, Rafael demolished the Italian 6-1 6-2.

Marat Safin(RUS) lost to Ruben Ramirez Hildalgo (ESP) after leading in the match 6-0 4-1! The final score was 0-6 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3

The 19 year old Spaniard is on the way to equalling Guillermo Vilas' record of 53 consecutive wins on clay should he defend his title here in Rome
