Andy Roddick Three-time defending champion Roger Federer played fantastically at the Centre Court of the All-England Club on Wednesday, as the World No.1 defeated Brit Tim Henman 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

After comfortably winning the first set 6-4, the Swiss super star won ten consecutive games, jumping to a 6-4, 6-0, 4-0 lead. He fired six aces and broke Henman in six of eight opportunities while never losing serve.

Federer, who has now won 43 consecutive matches on grass (a record in the Open Era), is bidding for a fourth successive Wimbledon title. He has won five titles so far in 2006, equaling world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, but leads the tour in the number of finals reached with nine. The Swiss star won titles at Doha, Australian Open, AMS Indian Wells, AMS Miami, and Halle, and was runner-up at Dubai, AMS Monte Carlo, AMS Rome and Roland Garros, each time losing to Nadal.

Last year's finalist Andy Roddick fired 28 aces in his 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-2 come-from-behind win over Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic. After losing the first set in a close tie-break, Roddick broke Tipsarevic early in the second but had to save break points serving at 4-3.

The third set was once against very contested, going to a tie-break, in which Tipsarevic opened a 3-0 lead serving. The American would storm back, winning the next four points and eventually take the tie-break 8-6. In the final set, Roddick, who hit 53 winners throughout the match, jumped to a quick lead, breaking the Serbian at 2-1 and winning the set 6-2.

Roddick said: "My whole thing is survive and advance, you know. I'm glad I served myself out of some big situations, because I haven't done that really this year so far. My serve the last couple of weeks has gotten a lot better. I'm just about, you know, survive and advance, that's it."

Eighth seed James Blake again needed four sets to advance, defeating Taipei's Yeu-Tzuoo Wang 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to avenge his loss to Wang in San Jose earlier this year. Blake next faces Max Mirnyi.

Marcos Baghdatis posted a 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-2 hard-fought win over Alan Mackin to move into the second round at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. The Cypriot, who blasted 24 aces and 72 winners in today’s match, will next face Andrei Pavel.

Colombia's Alejandro Falla posted the biggest win in his career by defeating No.9 seed Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 6-3. Falla, currently No.127 in the INDESIT ATP Ranking, played mainly in the Challenger circuit this season, reaching the finals at Bogota and Mexico City.

The lefty South American will next face German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Czech Radek Stepanek, seeded 14th, rallied from a set down to defeat former semifinalist Xavier Malisse 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-1.

Roger Federer opened Wimbledon with a first-round match against Richard Gasquet started promisingly, breaking the teenager's serve in the Frenchmen's opening game and leading 3-0. Unfortunately after that the rain started (as typically expected at Wimbledon). After the drizzle the game continued and Roger won the first set 6-3, Richard never able to level. Then the rain started. Again. And that was it for Wimbledon Day 1, they continue today, hopefully finishing their matches!!

The official "Day 2" schedule includes Andre Agassi, who has announced his retirement at this year's US Open, his home tournament, after a chronic back injury that has made him skip both the Australian and French Opens this year already.

Andy Murray, Tim Henman, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick are also on today.

Check out Roger's jacket as he walked on:

It has "Federer" on the pocket and the Federer Coat of Arms, in Gold. Egotistical or Class?

Grass season rolls in

June 21st 2006 01:05
Roger Federer has made history by equalling Bjorn Bjorg's record of 41 matches on Grass. In comparison, Andy Roddick failed to make history when he was defeated by James Blake at Queens (mentioned earlier) on route to become the first player to win the Stella Artois Championships for 4 consecutive years.

Lleyton Hewitt will face James Blake in the Stella Artois Finals after defeating British Tim Henman in 3 sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. James Blake caused the biggest upset of the day, beating fellow American Andy Roddick, 7-5, 6-4.

Otherwise known as "Queens", the Stella Artois championships are seen as the lead-up tournament to Wimbledon. However, both Lleyton James Blake will have more than a handful of problems trying to defeat Roger Federer, who progressed to the finals at the Gerry Webber Open in Halle, Germany, facing Czech Tomas Berdych. Federer has won the previous 3 Wimbly titles, and should he beat Tomas tomorrow he will equal Bjorn Bjorg's grass-court record of 41 straight wins

There was a lot at stake at this year's Roland Garros Final. Roger Federer was looking to join the group of elite players who held all 4 grand slam titles, as well as be the first person since Australia's Rod Laver to hold the calender slam. Rafael Nadal was looking to extend his clay court streak as well as be the youngest player since Bjorn Bjorg to defend his Grand Slam title

ATP Tennis and the World Cup

I don't know why but almost every tennis player I know seems to love the game that is soccer/football. Here are pictures from www.ATPtennis.com (Copyright, all rights reserved) of Rafael Nadal, David Nalbandian, and a whole group of Germans in Halle (for the grass tournament coming up) cheering on their teams.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal claimed his first career win over former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt to charge into the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The 20-year-old Spaniard improved his perfect record at Roland Garros to 11-0 and extended his Open Era record clay court winning streak to 57 matches. His career record on clay is 97-12.

Hewitt (now 3-1) is one of only five players with a winning head-to-head record against Nadal. But before today the pair last played at the Australian Open in January 2005, when Nadal had just one tournament victory to his name and was ranked No. 47 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings. Hewitt was ranked No. 2
