Marat Safin's blog, Stockholm, Moscow

October 15th 2006 14:00
Everyone needs to go read Marat's blog. Like right now. It's the most mindblowing, deep thing I've read in ages. (Maybe because I don't read deep things very often.) I always have this image of Marat as being some 21 year old playboy but he sounds so mature and philosophical and cynical in his blog. Like wishing everybody to take care and not go do drugs and drink till your brain is fried. Argh, good words.

Marat Safin and Nikolai Davydenko are playing in the Moscow Kremlin Cup final as I speak. It's a battle of the Russians, although Marat says Davydenko's originally from Ukraine. Hmm. Davydenko is leading and about to take the 3rd set after they both have one set each.

In other news, Joachim Johansson beat top seed Rafael Nadal in the second round, in straight sets. This is completely awesome because the Swede has been injured for what seems like a billion years (it's not, really, he got injured sometime after last year's Wimbly, I think --> I definitely remember him playing in Halle, he played doubles with one Marat Safin(!), losing against Roger Federer and Yves Allegro. Marat also lost to Roger in the singles of that tournament but that story is for another day.) Last year "Pimpim", as he is affectionately called, reached a career high of 9th in the ATP rankings after winning the Adelaide International in February. He's plummeted down as low as 1062 (or something around there, definitely greater than 1000) since then and has slowly climbed back up to 690-something.

His profile can be found at Wiki and on the ATP site. And no, he isn't related to Thomas Johansson, who won the Australian Open a couple of years back.

He lost to Jarkko Niemenen yesterday though, the match going to 3 sets and both of them initally taking a set each, both being tiebreaks.

Here's a Youtube highlights of Nadal/Johansson:

And Marat just lost to Nikolai: 4-6 7-6 4-6.

Roger Federer wins the US Open

October 7th 2006 00:53
Sorry about this taking so long.

So yes, by now I'm sure everyone knows that Roger beat Andy Roddick in the finals of the US Open. It was nice to see Andy in a final again. Roger himself said:

"I'm really happy to see him back at the top and I'm really happy to play against him."

In a way it was fitting for Roger and Andy to play each other in the finals - they missed each other at the Wimbledon finals where Roger beat Rafael Nadal.

Roger beat Andy 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 to claim his 3rd consecutive US Open Title.

No other person has won three consecutive US Open titles and three consecutive Wimbledon titles in the same years.

Roger now has 9 Grand Slam titles under his belt.

Andy's good form in the US Open series has pushed him back up to number 3 in the tennis rankings, with a view to making the Masters Cup in Shanghai at the end of the season.

Russia and Argentina will contest the Davis Cup final after defeats to Australia and the USA respectively.

These two were contests of contrast, with Argentina beating Australia in 3 straight rubbers and the fourth match between Russia's Dmitry Tursunov and America's Andy Roddick needing to go to 17-15 in the fifth set of the fourth match.

That match was the longest final set in a World Group Finals Match.

Dmitry Tursunov was also the hero of the quarter-finals matchup against France, beating French prodigy Richard Gasquet in the deciding 5th rubber.

After the match a delighted Tursunov said: “It’s a great feeling, you can’t really describe it. I’m really glad I won it and glad the crowd got to enjoy the match.”

Scorelines:

Argentina 5 - Australia 0

Nalbandian d Philippoussis 64 63 63
Acasuso d Hewitt 16 64 46 62 61
Nalbandian/Calleri d Arthurs/Hanley 64 64 75

Russia 3 - USA 2

Safin d Roddick 64 63 76(5)
Youzhny d Blake 75 16 61 75
Bryan/Bryan d Tursunov/Youzhny 63 64 62
Tursunov d Roddick 63 64 57 36 17 -15

The finals will be played in Russia on Dec 1-3.
