Tennis - August 2010

1st day, 1st round

August 31st 2010 13:01
The US Open got off to a cracking start with all the players you would think would easily get through to the second round.... did just that.
No real upsets from the first round, except for maybe Dinara Safina whose form is just getting from bad to worse, she lost to Hantuchova in two, but hey next year is whole other year Dinara, and Lleyton "fidgety" Hewitt who lost in five against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Although non of the favourites lost, some did have some tough times, Kim Clijsters went to Neverland for a couple of games in her second set against Hungarian Greta Arn, but returned just in time to finish it off without having to go to a third set.

Swede Robin Soderling also battled in his first round, having to go five sets against Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer, but clinching it in the end 6-4. Federer's through, Venus is through, Melanie "I wrote inspirational stuff on my shoes" Oudin is through, Roddick is through - he just managed to crack a smile at the end, along with Gael Monfils who had some controversy to rub off against Robert Kendrick, did he touch it? did he? I guess we'll never know.

Here are some of the other results from day one:

MENS:
Nikolay Davydenko bt Michael Russell 6-4;6-1;6-3
Taylor Dent bt Alejandro Falla 6-4;7-5;6-1
Juan Carlos Ferrero bt Martin Klizan 6-1;6-3;6-0
Marin Cilic bt Illya Marchenko 7-5;6-3;6-1

WOMENS:
Sam Stosur bt Elena Vesnina 3-6;7-6;61
Ana Ivanovic bt Ekaterina Makarova 6-3;6-2
Jie Zheng bt Timea Bacsinsky 7-6;7-6
Victoria Azarenka bt Monica Niculescu 6-0;5-7;6-1
Elena Dementieva bt Olga Govortsova 6-1;6-2

For more results, schedules and after match interviews visit the US Open website.

Enjoy the tennis, day two action coming up in a few hours!!

Big day tomorrow

August 29th 2010 21:05

So the much anticipated US Open begins tomorrow with some interesting questions just waiting to be answered like:

Will Andy Murray finally win a grand slam?
Can Kim Clijsters win again?
Will Nadal flash those guns and get that elusive US crown?
Will Federer finally bring his twin daughters to watch a match??
Can Ana Ivanovic get past the 2nd round?? Please Ana, come on now... seriously.
Who's Djokovic going to imitate this time?
Will those after match on court interviews not be so lame??
And who will throw the first tantrum?

There are more questions to be asked, but I guess we'll just have to wait for the answers over the next 2 weeks at Flushing Meadows. (what's up with that name actually, sounds like a public loo...), but seriously, who do you think is gonna win the final grand slam this year?

It's bound to be an exciting two weeks.

Peace.

New Haven gets crackin'

August 26th 2010 10:22
So the warm-up to the US Open is underway AS WE SPEAK, and it's now into the 3rd round with some pleasing 2nd round results. Elena Demetieiva, probably one of the most underrated and unfortunate players to not have won a slam, seems to be doing well after a calf injury and won her match against Katherina Bondarenko 7-6(4); 6-7(5); 6-4 to advance to the next round.

Other results on the women's side:

Nadia Petrova bt Bethanie Mattek Sands 6-3; 6-2
Flavia Penetta bt Olga Govortsova 6-3; 6-2
Dinara Safina bt Daniela Hantuchova 7-6(4); 7-6(2)
Marion Bartoli bt Anastasia Rodionova 6-3; 6-1
Caroline Wozniacki bt Dominika Cibulkova 6-4; 6-1

On the mens side it was a closer affair than some of the womens' matches. One of my faves Marcos "I have the best smile ever" Baghdatis made it through the second round to beat Igor Andreev of Russia 6-2; 6-4, and he'll now play Juan Ignacio Chela from Argentina.

Other mens' singles results from the 3rd round:

Thiemo de Bakker bt Florian Mayer 6-7; 6-1; 7-5
Viktor Troicki bt Alexander Dolgopolov 6-7; 7-6; 6-2
Radek Stepanek bt Victor Hanescu 7-6; 6-7; 6-4
Denis Istomin bt Luka "sounds like fake name" Lacko 6-2; 2-6; 6-3

And those are the results. On a funner note, an event was held on last night in New York where Federer, Nadal, Sharapova and Azarenka played with some young tennis hopefuls in a little event. So nice to see tennis players have fun on the court for a change, they always seem SOOO serious! But I guess there is a lot of moola and reputation at stake.
