News from the tennis world

The Bangkok tournament starts in a couple of weeks in, you guessed it... Bangkok. Rafael Nadal got there early to go fishing with some friends, play some golf, go to vineyards, and oh yeah play a little tennis. But the biggest news surrounding this tournament is the return of Juan Martin Del Potro who will be playing in his first tournament back. Good to have you back JM, lets hope your wrist doesn't fall off.

In other news everyone's pissed at the Swiss team after they lost to Kazakstan in the Davis Cup... high five! Xavier Malisse beat Ivan Ljubicic in Open de Moselle and Serena Williams has pulled out of the Pan Pacific Open after foot surgery two months ago.

Not much really happening in the tennis world at the moment, and perhaps it's a good thing, it has been a chocker-blocked season filled with pretty much everything, so it's no surprise that players have decided to take some time off, do the stuff that normal people do and actually enjoy life with partners, friends, alcohol and tons and tons of publicity... who could ask for anything more.

Serbia in Davis Cup final

So who ever thought that a country like Serbia that has been through so many conflicts could get through to a Davis Cup final!! It is truly amazing and well done to Janko Tipsarevic (who I think is one of the coolest players with those glasses and tattoos) to getting them through by beating Radek Stepanek from the Czech Republic. Djokovic also powered his way through even with an injury, and took one for the team by beating Tomas Berdych as well. Serbia will now play France for Davis Cup glory in Serbia.

Other than that there hasn't been much going on in the Tennis world. There's a tournament going on in Tashkent (don't worry I don't know where that is either) and Alyssa Kleybanova is making herself known and powering her way through the first round of the Korean Open.

Other news is the "getting boring" argument about who is the greatest, Federer or Nadal. So here's my take on it... who cares! Federer has more slams and no one is denying that, and Nadal is making his way slowly but surely up there. All I can say is thank god Nadal is a modest and humble human being who isn't taking all of this seriously and still regards Federer as better than him.

Kudos to you Nadal. Still bleak you have a girlfriend though, really thought I had a shot.

Just joking.

Enjoy the tennis, and get out onto the courts, remember, healthy body = healthy mind.

Comeback kids

Seeing as there isn't much happening in the tennis world at the moment, lets reflect on some players who have seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth. It isn't unusual for players to go through a trough, but what doesn't kill you only makes your book longer - so we can expecting some long books...

Juan Martin Del Potro comes to mind first, that tall, lanky and sort of good looking Argentine has been out for way too long. After winning the US Open last year in arguably one of the best finals of the modern age, he injured his wrist, had surgery and hasn't played this whole year. Sad. But 2011 is a new year, and hopefully we will see him again stronger than ever. He's good for the game.

Let's see who else? Oh ya, Jelena Jankovic. Every grand slam I say I think she's gonna win this one, and then gets knocked out in the third round. The Serbian with a fivehead really needs to shape up and win one already, this whole losing early in a slam is getting old now. The jokes over. But she really hasn't featured in any tournament for a while, getting serious. The other Serbian Ana Ivanovic seems to be doing better after her horrible form since winning the French Open.

The Serb got to the fourth round of the US Open before losing to eventual champion Kim Clijsters. But she's a good competitor and one of my favourite players so it would be nice to see her back with that great backhand down the line.

Marin Cilic... where are you???? The dude who looks like Louis Theroux has vanished from the tennis scene and needs to make an insane comeback, win the Australian and have everyone talking about him again... that's a perfect world.

The only reason I mention some of these players is because, lets me honest, the competition is lacking a bit, and these players have the potential to win Grand Slams and give the dominating players a run for their money. It just takes some confidence y'all.

Nadal defeats the Djoker

What a thrilling end to an exciting US Open. The Men's final was postponed to Monday due to the rain on Sunday. The match started off with a long and close rally that signified great things to come in the match. After a close first set Nadal took it 6-4, only to be broken for the third time in the tournament in the second set. Nadal who changed his service grip (after all these years) to a more continental hold, displayed the benefits as he pummelled serves 12mph faster than he could before.

Kim does it again

It may not have been the most exciting match everyone was hoping for, but it was still a joy to watch. Kim Clijsters played against seventh seed Vera Zvonareva from Russia in what everyone was hoping would be a cracker.

The first four games started off well enough with some clean middle of the racket ball striking, but Kim broke Vera at 2-2 in the first set, and it was all down hill from there. She ended up winning the match 6-2; 6-1 as a distraught Zvonareva put on a brave face. You gotta feel sorry for her, she played an awesome tournament without dropping a set and then cracks at the last hurdle. But she'll get a slam one day I think

Not very exciting

So it's pretty reasonable to say that the US Open yesterday didn't offer the most exciting of matches. Vera Zvonerva breezed past Kaia Kanepi 6-3; 7-5, and Caroline Wozniacki kept her top form to beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-2; 7-5. These two winners will now face off in the semi tomorrow, and my money is on Wozniacki personally.

On the men's side an intense Novak Djokovic beat Gael Monfils 7-6; 6-1; 6-2 to book his place in the semis. But the most anticipated match of the day was Federer VS Soderling which is becoming an exciting rivalry, but unfortunately this match was anything but exciting

US Open last night

Excitement was brewing before the start of play yesterday, and it was still reeling after it all ended. The 4 and half hour match against Sam Querrey and Stanislas Wawrinka was undoubtedly one of the best matches of the Open, although I will be honest and say that I didn't watch the whole thing... my attention span doesn't last that long. He ended up winning 7-6; 6-7; 7-5; 4-6; 6-4... talk about a topsy turvy match.

Weekend at the Open

The US Open had an interesting weekend with some upsets and some not so upsetting. British hopeful Andy Murray was ousted by Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in a surprise result, I had pegged as this years champion... oh well. He'll now play the last American standing Sam Querrey in todays match up, should be interesting.

In other news, last years winner Kim Clijsters breezed past a nervous looking Ana Ivanovic, but at least she's getting further in slams and improving all the time after her fall from the top. I expect at least a semi final appearance next year Ana. Sam Stosur beat Elena Dementieva in a thrilling three setter and Caroline Wozniacki put together a stellar performance against Maria Sharapova in a match that was fiercely fought. The score didn't reflect the match that had a number of near 30 shot rallies, but too many double faults and unforced errors lost Maria the match

Day 5 at the US Open

Howdy

It was a pretty standard day at the US Open yesterday with no real upsets taking place. Venus cruised through her 3rd round match as did Nadal, Verdasco, Ivanovic and Dementieva, making for some awesome round of 16 matches will take place tomorrow and monday... looking forward to it BIG TIME

Too hot to handle

So I missed a day of the Open on Tuesday, but nothing really exciting happened anyway. Yesterday was the talk of the town though as soaring heat of 90 degrees and 100 degrees on court had the planners enforcing the heat rule.

The day started off fine with Ivanovic winning and marking her spot in the 3rd round!! Well Done!! She beat the 21 seed Jie Zheng of China 6-3;6-0 in a dominant fashion. Other winners were Clijsters, V. Williams, Stosur, Dementieva and Bondarenko who beat American hopeful Melanie Oudin. But the big talking point of the day was the collapsing of the 10th seed Victoria Azarenka who fainted during her match against Argentine Gisela Dulko
