ATP Tennis and the World Cup

June 10th 2006 05:56
I don't know why but almost every tennis player I know seems to love the game that is soccer/football. Here are pictures from www.ATPtennis.com (Copyright, all rights reserved) of Rafael Nadal, David Nalbandian, and a whole group of Germans in Halle (for the grass tournament coming up) cheering on their teams.

Rafael Nadal for Spain

David Nalbandian for Argentina

German ATP Players Tommy Haas, Nicolas Kiefer, Alexander Waske, Rainer Schuettler, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Bjorn Phau, Michael Kohlmann, Philipp Petzschner, Andreas Beck, Lars Uebel, Frank Moser and Mischa Zverev cheered on their national soccer team, watching the opening World Cup soccer game on the large scree in Halle. A few weeks ago at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship in Düsseldorf, Alexander Waske was presented with 25 original German national jerseys from the local Mercedes-Benz Dealership. He has distributed these to German players and coaches, who will all wear the jerseys while watching the World Cup matches.

Roger gets support from his favourite team (FC Basel, Switzerland) for his upcoming Roland Garros Final:

World No.1 Roger Federer will face defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final of Roland Garros on Sunday. Read what a few of the members of the Swiss National Soccer team said:

Pascal Zuberbühler (goalkeeper, playing at FC Basle): "Now that Roger has reached the final, I'm convinced that he'll win on Sunday and make the Roger-Slam. So far he has been playing very well and I think that now he's ready to defeat Nadal on clay for the first time."

Hakan Yakin (middle field, has grown up in Basle and played there for a long time): "Federer has become so strong on clay that he doesn't have to fear any opponent, not even Nadal. I'm sure that he'll do it."

Jakob Kuhn (coach): "I've been admiring Federer for many years. He's a complete athlete, the best tennis player in the world. I will be very happy if he wins also Roland Garros, he deserves it so much. I would love to see him visit the team next week and I hope that his schedule in Halle will allow him to come to see the Swiss team."
