Rafael Nadal started his Internationali d'Italia campaign yesterday, beating compatriot and good friend Carlos Moya (ESP) 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
The 19 year old Spaniard is on the way to equalling Guillermo Vilas' record of 53 consecutive wins on clay should he defend his title here in Rome.
Along with Nadal, fourth seed David Nalbandian (ARG) beat qualifier Fernando Vicente (ESP) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, fifth seed Andy Roddick (USA) powered past Victor Hanescu (ROM) 6-1, 6-0, and Nicholay Davydenko (RUS) managed a 6-1, 6-4 defeat over Boris Pashanski of Serbia and Montenegro. Marat Safin (RUS) also managed to get into the 2nd round.

From 1pm Rome time David Nalbandian (ARG) plays Paul Henri MATHIEU (FRA), followed by 5th seed Andy RODDICK (USA) vs Marcos BAGHDATIS (CYP), the finalist at the Australian Open. After that match is Roger Federer against wildcard Polito Starace before the 9pm night match between British teenager Andy Murray and King of Clay courts Rafael Nadal.

Played a lot as a kid starting at 6 and stopping at 11 and becoming just a casual player thereafter.
49 and counting now for Nadal. Absolutely unstoppable on clay, as is Federer on all the other surfaces!!
