Surprises abound - Rome Day 3
May 11th 2006 10:08
There was a mistake on the Rome Masters Website! Yesterday night the Order of Play stated that second seed Rafael Nadal would be playing Scottish teenager Andy Murray. I found this strange because Andy Murray had lost in the first round, and was very confused because I do not currently have tennis coverage! But today they changed it to say that Rafael was playing Andy's victor Filippo Volandri (ITA). Nonetheless, Rafael demolished the Italian 6-1 6-2.
Marat Safin(RUS) lost to Ruben Ramirez Hildalgo (ESP) after leading in the match 6-0 4-1! The final score was 0-6 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3).
Meanwhile, American Andy Roddick cruised past Australian Open Finalist Marcos Bagdatis (CYP) after dropping the first set, 3-6 6-1 6-2. That game was also disrupted when a spectator collapsed and they had to wait for medics to arrive!
Englishmen Tim Henman (d Thomas Johannson (SWE) 7-6(8) 6-1) and Greg Rusedski (d Stefano Galvani (ITA) 7-6(4) 6-4) have also advanced to the next round.

Poor Thomas stated in his blog that his eye had been acting up under the lights at night and he was less able to play at night than in the daytime. He had apparently asked to play his matches during the day but both his matches had been at night.

Roger Federer went to visit the Pope! Apparently they spoke to each other in German, very cool. Thomas mentions that Roger is practically a genius with languages in his blog.
