Too hot to handle
September 2nd 2010 11:48
So I missed a day of the Open on Tuesday, but nothing really exciting happened anyway. Yesterday was the talk of the town though as soaring heat of 90 degrees and 100 degrees on court had the planners enforcing the heat rule.
The day started off fine with Ivanovic winning and marking her spot in the 3rd round!! Well Done!! She beat the 21 seed Jie Zheng of China 6-3;6-0 in a dominant fashion. Other winners were Clijsters, V. Williams, Stosur, Dementieva and Bondarenko who beat American hopeful Melanie Oudin. But the big talking point of the day was the collapsing of the 10th seed Victoria Azarenka who fainted during her match against Argentine Gisela Dulko.
The Belarussian seemed out of sorts from the beginning of the match and called for the trainer who assessed her arm and did tests for dizziness. She continued to play and slumped to a 1-5 down in the first set until collapsing unconscious onto the hot hard court. She was immediately attended to by ball kids, line judges, Dulko herself and medical staff who wheeled her off in a wheelchair and took her straight to hospital, where she was released hours later with the all clear. We're still not sure if it was the heat, but she apparently experienced a fall during trainging and may have been concussed!! It's an unfortunate end to her campaign as she was one of the hopefuls to win. Get Better!!
Other scores on the mens side were:
Andy Murray bt Lukas Lacko 6-3/6-2/6-2
Janko Tipsarevic bt Andy Roddick!!!!! 3-6/7-5/6-4/7-6 - Big upset!!
Michael Llodra bt Tomas Berdych 7-6/6-4/6-4
Ryan Harrison bt Ivan Ljubicic 6-3/6-7/6-3/6-4
