US Open Day 2 Start and Dinara Safina
September 1st 2009 18:55
Not much has happened today. A couple of matches have been finished and no surprises, other than Women's #1, Dinara Safina, losing the first set in her first round match. Honestly, I don't care if she loses a set or two (well, not two, since it's women's...), but when she loses in a tiebreak, because of her double fault, what are we supposed to think?
We've been hearing for too long that after Henin left, there is no real #1 player. Safina has tried to convince us all that she deserves her current spot, but the way that she's playing this match, and the results she's gotten say otherwise. As Johnny Mac said yesterday, "it should all happen here, at the Open". Granted, I paraphrased, and he was talking about Challenger tournaments that occur during Opens, the idea is the same. The Opens are the Holy Grails of Tennis. That's why even when the Olympics come up during the season, nothing really happens there. Tennis is all about the Opens, and look at how many Safina has.
To put the low level of tennis into perspective, Roddick and Federer played an epic Wimbledon Final. It had a total of around 77 games. This match with Safina has 25 games. That's 1/3 as many. Roger and Andy had a total of around 60 errors while Safina and Rogowska have around 40 total errors. That means that the ratio of errors per games is .78 : 1.6. That's almost twice as many errors in Safina's game, and Roddick and Federer played for 5 hours.
All in all, I'm a bit disappointed in the state of women's tennis at the moment, and the only reason I'm watching is because it's the only thing that's on, and if I'm lucky, I'll hear the commentators talking about Men's tennis.
I'll post again when some real tennis happens...
