The Stella Artois Championships

With its global audience, the Stella Artois Championships are recognised as one of the top 10 tennis events in the world. Held in the run up to Wimbledon, the Championships are consistently supported by the cream of men's singles and doubles players.

Since its inception in 1979, 25 of the last 27 Wimbledon champions have played at the Championships. Connors, Lendl, Edberg and Sampras are amongst the legends of the game who have proudly held the massive silver Stella Artois Championships trophy aloft.

Action shot at the Queens Club Courts Recent Championships have witnessed the irrepressible Lleyton Hewitt reign victorious; winning three times in a row, while the formidable Andy Roddick equalled Hewitt’s hat-trick in 2005.

But will one of these two players match McEnroe and Becker and take a fourth title victory?

Nadal Says Spaniards Must Beleive in World Cup Title

© ATP
Rafael NadalBy Rafael Nadal/DPA

I must confess: I don’t know where to start from. If I can remember right, this is the first time I’m writing a column for any publication.

I love soccer and the World Cup fascinates me! My uncle Miguel Ángel played in the past three World Cups (United States, France and Korea/Japan) and because of that my family and I become apprehensive before the World Cup’s kick off. I have to say that this time I was not as nervous as the previous World Cups because I had my focus (and nervousness) in Roland Garros.

Unfortunately I haven’t had much time to watch the matches, although I did manage to see a few. The match I enjoyed the best so far was Argentina against Côte d'Ivoire. I also enjoyed watching Sweden, even thought they were unable to impose their style: counterpunching.

Spain has a young but experienced team. Most of the Spaniards play for good European teams, which make them more used to the pressure of important matches.

Spain also has an experienced coach in Luis Aragonés. My uncle Miguel Angel played for him in Mallorca and said that Aragonés is one of the most incredible coaches he has ever played for.

I think that Spain must believe that they can win the title. Maybe that’s what has been missing for them to win their first World Cup trophy.

We have a lot of great players in the Spanish soccer team but I believe that the mental aspect is a key factor that will determine whether we will win or lose. In my opinion Germany and Italy are teams that in the past were better prepared mentally and because of that they have been so successful.

Without a doubt, Brazil is the favorite. I think that they have a dream team, however there is a big gap between being the best and winning it all. There are also many aspects that can help or thwart the teams during the World Cup such as pressure, luck, etc… especially in the second round, when losers go home.

Underneath Brazil, there are many teams at the same level. I believe that England has a very compact team; that the Germans are usual winners and are playing at home; that France is a mystery; and Italy always has a shot. Not to mention Argentines always play their hearts out.

Before I finish this column I must say that I’m extremely happy for winning Roland Garros. I hope that when the World Cup ends our players can feel the same joy as I did. This would mean that we would have won the World Cup. Go Spain!!!

ATP Tennis and the World Cup

June 10th 2006 05:56
I don't know why but almost every tennis player I know seems to love the game that is soccer/football. Here are pictures from www.ATPtennis.com (Copyright, all rights reserved) of Rafael Nadal, David Nalbandian, and a whole group of Germans in Halle (for the grass tournament coming up) cheering on their teams.

French Open Draw!

May 26th 2006 11:44
I think the French Open draw is horrid. But then that's because I have a lot of players that I would like to see go far in this tournament BUT they're all playing each other in the first round.

I've yet to check the Women's Draw but it can be seen here (click on the thumbnail for a bigger view

So okay, Australian Tennis..

May 16th 2006 21:09
Lleyton Hewitt has cracked the top ten again for the first time since...well, the first tiime in a while.

Lleyton has not won any tournaments since the Sydney International last year and was unable to beat James Blake or Andy Murray in the finals of Las Vegas and San Jose respectively. Because of this Lleyton's ranking had slipped to 14 early on in the year

Surprises abound - Rome Day 3

May 11th 2006 10:08
There was a mistake on the Rome Masters Website! Yesterday night the Order of Play stated that second seed Rafael Nadal would be playing Scottish teenager Andy Murray. I found this strange because Andy Murray had lost in the first round, and was very confused because I do not currently have tennis coverage! But today they changed it to say that Rafael was playing Andy's victor Filippo Volandri (ITA). Nonetheless, Rafael demolished the Italian 6-1 6-2.

Marat Safin(RUS) lost to Ruben Ramirez Hildalgo (ESP) after leading in the match 6-0 4-1! The final score was 0-6 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3
